The Peacock 377

June 11.  Rhona just announced at dinner that she is pregnant.  She says that she missed her period over three weeks ago, and that the child could only be Philip's.  We are of course all worried about her.  and now we understand why she has been so shy and withdrawn.  She actually burst out crying when she told us the news.  Funny.  She is so strong and cool, I could never have imagined her crying about anything.  nor getting accidentally pregnant.  But I'm not going to blame her.  She had that pig Philip to manage and now he is no longer present to accept paternal obligations.  Lydia stayed close to her for the evening.  There is no TV here, but they have a very good and huge library that takes up three rooms, so there is always something interesting to read.  So, we are having reading parties after dinner.  Somehow Rhona got hold of a novel by a dead British woman, Virginia Woolf is her name, I think.  It's called the Waves.  Boring.  Way too much detail about a group of privileged upper class children breeding neurosis.  But even if my English comprehension is still a bit uncertain, the sound of her writing is nice, lovely even, like wind in summer leaves and the waves lapping gently on the shore...
