"Mom came into the Christian faith in 1970, age fourteen, thanks to some missionary hippies from the US. they had a community in a houseboat on one of the canals in Amsterdam. She found them welcoming, kind, caring, and fun, and says that that was when Jesus first became real for her. Adriana was not pleased, tried to forbid her from seeing them again. In a fury, she followed Mom there one day, then stormed the Arc, the name of the houseboat, hoping to rescue her child from the corruptions of religious fanaticism. Instead, she was charmed into submission by the friendly kindness of the people there, and herself ended up converting to the faith.
"Would there be a message in there for me?" says Tristan's mom.
"Not specifically", says Carl. "Why?"
"Well, I do find you people compelling."
"And Tristan is already rescued from us", says Michael, smiling.
"And so kind of you to invite me to lunch with you, and get vaccinated against covid. But forgive me, I don't mean to suck up all the oxygen. Carl, you are telling us about your grandmother...."
