The Peacock 465

Tristan does return to us, followed by Glen.  They both take seats at the table, saying nothing.  Tristan looks sullen and defeated, but still not prepared to accept defeat.  Carl brings them both coffee  Sarah appears annoyed, and apparently not interested in participating, though she does stoically remain, focussing more on her cup of coffee than the people she is sharing the table with.  She had might as well be at a communal table in a trendy coffee shop with her laptop in front of her, for all she seems to care.

"You'll miss your cab", Carl says smiling, as soon as he sits down again.  Tristan doesn't reply.

"Tristan has agreed to stay long enough to meet with everyone this morning", says Glen.

"And after that I'm leaving", he says defiantly.

"As you wish", says Carl.

The boy, and he seems like a boy, appears about to burst into tears, but then his face hardens.  He is not easily going to cede anything.  He rifles through his pack and pulls out a small book, evidently a Bible, which he opens and begins to read.

"Are we still going to work on the trail", I say to Carl.

"It can wait till the afternoon.  Provided it doesn't rain", he says.

"I'll go", says Sarah, swallowing the last of her coffee.

"Sure you want to do it alone?" says Carl.

"I'm a big girl.  I know where the tools are."  She gets up and heads for the kitchen with her mug,

"And where the bodies are buried", says Carl.

"That too", she says smiling.
