We are all quietly studying the menus. The rain is drumming against the large windows of the Sunrise Diner where we are all seated. There is no music in the background, which leaves this feeling rather like studying in the school library.
"How about Chinese today?" says Sarah.
"My stomach is set on a burger and fries", says Michael.
"Oh, how very male of you", says Sarah.
"Now-now, children, let's all get along", says Carl. "By the way, both of you, Michael and Sarah, what is it with you anyway?"
"Moi?" says Michael, theatrically. pointing to himself.
"Oh, just listen to the innocent voice of patriarchy", mutters Sarah, but it is clear that she cannot resist smiling. Then to Carl she says, "We're actually tremendously fond of each other."
"Oh, don't start", Michael sputters, but he is also clearly enjoying this play between them.
"We're really like brother and sister", she says.
"Well", mutters Michael, "Sister and sister." And now Sarah is starting to giggle.
"We're really a lot like you and Melissa", she says.
"Now, really", says Carl, arching his eyebrows, "Don't you start!" And now everyone is laughing.
