 "So then your father must have had some kind of love for his children."

"I wouldn't call it love.  He considered us his property, and he simply wanted  to assert his property rights over us.  But he couldn't do it anywhere in or near the Netherlands because the authorities and Interpol were both after him, not only for his crimes against his kids but for some other nefarious financial dealings that never really saw the light of day with us.  He knew he was a rat backed into a cornier, so there really wasn't a lot more harm he could or would do us."

"I don't imagine that his conscience might have kicked in about his filial duties towards you guys."

"Conscience?  Christopher, have you ever considered a career as a standup comedian?  I think you would do very well."

"So, what did you guys do there?"

"We were free labour.  He put us to work every day clearing the bush, helping him put in the gardens, and cutting trails in the forest.  Standard work for a ten year old girl and her fifteen year old brother.  But we actually came to like it there.  The forest was wonderful for hiking and playing games in, plus we almost never saw the old bastard..."
