The Peacock 1850

Jesus gets up and returns, first with a huge bowl full of garbanzos, then comes back again with a jar of tahini. He gets up one more time for a couple of lemons and a bulb of garlic. "And now", he says to me, "We are going to make hummus.. Christopher, please be so kind as to go to that lower cupboard to the left of the sink. There you will find a blender. Please bring it here to the table." That would have been the very tone of voice he used when he told his disciples to go and fetch a certain donkey that he would be triumphantly riding into Jerusalem on. Jesus riding a donkey. Not a horse. As I dump the first batch of garbanzos into the blender, I ask him, "Jesus, I have a question for you." "And I know exactly what you are going to ask me. I would never have driven a car, even had they been available in Palestine two thousand years ago. Then, I walked only in humility, and today now, I walk only in humility. "How about a bicycle¡" "Maybe a skateboard", he replies smiling as he spoons in some tahini on top of the garbanzos...
