Sarah says, "We do have an interesting variety here of same sex relationships."
She appears to ignore the awkward silence that has just descended on us, and appears unfazed that she just might be about to make a complete ass of herself.
Sheila seems to be suppressing what I suspect to be a particularly wicked grin, then she says quietly, "Just ask my ex-son-in-law", and she is glancing towards Matthew.
"Yes", says Sarah, to Michael, "you two were an item for a few years, weren't you?"
"And what's it to you, sister?" says Michael with a smile that could be interpreted either as hostile or ironical.
"How did you guys meet", asks Sarah, apparently determined to be bloody-minded.
"Michael seemed always to be finding excuses for visiting me in my little old antique shop, and the rest, as they say, is history."
"How long were you guys together?" she asks.
"Close to twenty years", says Michael.
"Did you ever get married?"
"We separated a few years before same sex marriage was enshrined in law in Canada", he says.
"By that time you had found religion", says Michael to his ex. "And you seemed determined to put your sinful past behind."
"Except for you", my dear Matthew, except for you..."
