"What do you mean by dark practices"" says Jennifer.
"In our house in Amsterdam, which was a huge eighteenth century mansion overlooking the canal, Dad had several rooms in the basement that we were forbidden to enter. He often went there alone at night. And sometimes we could smell smoke, other times heard a weird wailing kind of chant that seemed kind of like his voice. It gave us all the creeps, and he had also a strange collection of friends who would sometimes visit him down there. Mom was thoroughly opposed to what he was doing, and that is when she got the idea to move us with her to a small townhouse that she leased on the other side of the city. I would have been ten and Melissa was four or five. Around that time Dad was also spending copious amounts of time here in the mansion, and that was probably around when he met and got involved with the mother of Naomi, our half-sister....
