"And Ahmed was your stepfather whom your mother tracked all the way to Stella's where she found you sitting at her kitchen table."
"That's correct."
"Tell me something, please, Carl. Why did your parents divorce?"
"Mom became aware during the last year of the marriage of some of the things our father was doing to me and Melissa. She was horrified. She wanted to rescue us. She did. We really owe her a lot."
"But, I don't understand something here. Why then, after the divorce, would she allow you both, two vulnerable kids, to have to go and spend time with your father at the mansion every year, unprotected. Out in the wilderness?"
"It was blackmail. Dad said that if any of us were going to have any of his coin in our pockets then we would have to comply to his demands."
"And he never touched you again?"
"Mom had already notified the authorities in Holland about what Dad had done to us. The deal was that if she heard of even one single inappropriate act or gesture directed by him towards either one of us, then she would launch an international manhunt against him, fortune or no fortune. He abided faithfully to her terms...
